Postgame notes from WFU's win over Virginia on Saturday. The Demon Deacons beat UVa 28-17 to improve to 6-3 on the season, 4-2 in ACC play.
• Muggsy Bogues opened the gate to bring the team onto the field against Virginia.
• Wake Forest wore gold jerseys for first time in 1956. Wake Forest last wore gold jerseys while on the old campus in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
• Team captains for Wake Forest were D.J. Boldin and Aaron Curry
• Andrew Wright kicked off for the Demon Deacons, allowing Shane Popham to focus on punting and kicking
• Josh Adams missed Saturday’s game once again but was available
• Wake Forest took their opening drive the distance 11 plays, 55 yards including a 2-yard touchdown pass from Riley Skinner to Ben Wooster to go on top 7-0.
• On the next possession, Wake Forest’s Aaron Curry forced the game’s first turnover, stripping Cedric Peerman and recovering the fumble as well
• Boo Robinson collected his first career interception Saturday in the first quarter
• Following Robinson’s interception, Riley Skinner connected with freshman Yloo Brown on a 58-yard touchdown pass to give Wake Forest a 14-0 lead with 2:36.
• Virginia followed up with a 33-yard field goal by Robert Randolph dropping Wake’s lead to 14-3 with 13:18 left in the 2nd quarter.
• Wake Forest drove the length of the field on a 15 play, 71-yard drive in just under nine minutes to score on a 1-yard touchdown run by Brandon Pendergrass to go up 21-3. Pendergrass amassed 59 yards on the drive. The drive was the longest time-of-possession scoring drive of the year for Wake Forest.
• Kevin Patterson intercepted a Marc Verica pass on the subsequent UVa drive and returned it 53-yards for another Wake Forest touchdown. Chip Vaughn deflected the pass that landed in Patterson’s hand. It was Wake Forest’s first interception for a touchdown this season.
• Wake Forest led 28-3 at halftime. The 28 points marked the most points by the Demon Deacons in a half this year. Wake Forest also scored more in the first half than in the entire month of October (22 points in October)
• After a scoreless third quarter, Marc Verica opened the fourth quarter up with a score as he hooked up with tight end John Phillips on a 21-yard touchdown pass to bring UVa to within 28-10.
• After a defensive stop, the Cavaliers followed up their previous score with another touchdown, this time from Verica to Kevin Ogletree, cutting the Demon Deacon lead to 11 at 28-17 with just over 8 minutes left.
• Perhaps the biggest play of the game came from defensive lineman Kyle Wilbur who came up sack on 3rd down and 8 with 5:45 left.
• Brandon Pendergrass’ 114 rushing yards was a career high.
• Wake Forest was in control of the ball most of the game, leading the time of possession battle 37:08 to 22:52.
• Saturday’s attendance at the game was 34,014, the highest in 2008 at BB&T Field and the 11th highest all-time at Wake Forest.
• Wake Forest improves to 6-3 on the season, 4-2 in ACC play.
