NC Linebacker Loves Wake

Jared Barber

Three college programs have offered scholarships to rising senior linebacker Jared Barber and Wake Forest is one of them. DeaconSports caught up with Barber this week to get the latest in his recruitment

The Demon Deacons, along with NC State and West Virginia, have let Jared Barber know they would like him to join their program next year.

At 6-0 and 220-pounds Barber has a nice skill set for a linebacker and has the potential to help in run support while also being a quality defender on backs and tight ends in the passing game. DeaconSports first reported on Barber in late March and apparently the Demon Deacons are still very interested in him.

"I love Wake," Barber told DeaconSports this week. "Coach (Jim) Grobe does an amazing job and you can tell he really cares about his players as people and not as athletes first and foremost.

"The education at Wake Forest is just unbelievable and their program is definitely elite in the ACC. I think it's growing even more and more these days after seeing their practices, watching them work and the way they bust their butts. Wake's definitely up there (on his list)."

The fact that Wake Forest is only a twenty minute drive from Barber's home will, without a doubt, be something that helps the Deacons with the Mocksville (NC) Davie County prospect.

Barber is very familiar with both the school and the football program as he estimates he has been on campus about eight times so far. He attended games last year but they were just unofficial visits and he was not shown around by representatives from the school.

Are there any people close to him that are pushing him to stay close to home?

"To be honest I have some family here but not too much," he said. "They just tell me to go wherever will make me happy, because that's what will make them happy. My parents want me to stay close to home but they also tell me to do what I have to do. I'm going to be spending four or five years of my life at a certain university so it has to be my decision."

On the topic of family Barber has some in Kentucky, which might help West Virginia's chances as they aren't too far from that school.

While he is interested in all three of the schools that have offered, as well as some others, he isn't ready to come out with a list of favorites or start to narrow things down.

"There are a few things I like about different schools. Some schools have more pros than cons. Right now I'm just trying to figure that out about everybody. I want to find out what (position) they want me to play and about the education and stuff like that."

Barber has spoken with assistant coaches from Wake Forest and West Virginia recently and he plans on visiting both schools very soon. He will be at Wake in the near future though no date is set and he will be at WVU somewhere around June 11.
