Wake Forest coaches and fans alike were very excited when Michael Campanaro made his pledge during the spring. That excitement rose to another level last weekend after Campanaro displayed his skills at Wake's one day camp. DeaconSports.com spoke with the talented receiver about the camp and his plans for a possible early enrollment at Wake.

It is not often that a player commits to a program in the spring yet still participates in their summer camp. Michael Campanaro is the exception. On a blistering day last Sunday, Campanaro heated up the Wake Forest practice field.

It began when Campanaro posted the fastest 40 time in the camp, a 4.41 on what seemed to be a slow surface. He then moved to the receiver drills where he showed his quick feet, crisp route running, and soft hands. In the afternoon session, the intensity went up a notch when the receivers and defensive backs went one-on-one. Campanaro again displayed all his skills and was virtually uncoverable.

"I think the camp went real well," said Campanaro "There was a lot of talent there and it was the first time the coaches had seen me in person so I wanted to perform well." Campanaro did just that and received many compliments from the coaches. "Coach Knorr, who will be my position coach, treated the camp like it was a practice. I spoke with Coach Grobe and he said that he and the staff were thrilled with how I did and they were very happy."

When asked why he decided to participate in the camp, Campanaro responded, "I didn't camp at Wake last year and I wanted to show the coaches what I had. It is very rare that they offer a player they have not seen in person, but they did in my case so I wanted to show the coaches they had made a good decision. I also saw it as a bit of a audition for next season."

Next season my come a bit earlier than expected. "My parents and I have been talking all week about the possibility of me graduating early and enrolling in January. I want to talk to the coaches first and ask them their opinion. If they tell me that enrolling early may help me see the field as a freshman then it is a definite possibility. I am going to be taking English 12 this summer in case I decide to enroll early."

Campanaro also mentioned that he spoke with current Deacon receiver Devon Brown last weekend and is planning to train some with Brown this summer in Northern Virginia.

When watching Campanaro this past weekend, it is obvious he has been working hard at his craft. He displayed great speed and agility, polished route running, great hands, and high intensity. Campanaro looks to be a potential match-up problem at the slot position for Wake's opponents in the coming years.
