Former Demon Deacon point guard Chris Paul made his return to North Carolina Friday night as his New Orleans Hornets faced off with the Charlotte Bobcats. Thousands of Chris Paul and Wake Forest fans were in attendance to support the former Wake Forest star.

“Somewhat, I want to put on a show [for his fans], but at the same time, I just want to win,” Chris Paul said. “This is only one game we get to play here and at the end of the day, it’s about us in this locker room. It’s not about me, it’s not about my family, it’s about this team.”

Paul did play well on Friday, putting up 17 points and dishing 11 assists in leading New Orleans to a 99-85 win. On the season, Paul averages 21.5 points and 10 assists per game.

“I feel like I’ve put a lot of work into myself getting ready for the NBA,” Paul said of his success in the league. “Year in and year out, you become more comfortable and find out when to take your shots and that’s helped me a lot.”

Although Paul has been out of Wake Forest since 2005, he continues to support the Wake Forest program. He has created a scholarship at Wake Forest and can oftentimes be seen promoting Winston-Salem and Wake Forest University. “I don’t get to come home that much, but I talk to those guys all the time,” Paul said of the team. “Coach Gaudio, Coach Battle, Coach Kelsey. Anytime those guys have a game, I’m checking up on them. I talk to Cam Stanley almost every other day,” he continued. “I watch those guys play just about every game I can.”

Paul, who is unable to stay in Charlotte to attend the Meineke Car Care Bowl due to a game in Cleveland Saturday night, believes the Demon Deacon basketball team is talented enough to have a solid season in the ACC. “I sent a lot of guys a message before the first game telling them they have a lot to play for this season, especially for the coaches,” said the 6’ guard from Winston-Salem. “They’re a lot better than they think they are. Everyone picked them to finish last in the conference but you have two of the best guards in the country and an athletic team so they should be doing pretty well.”
