The time to become a Demon Deacon arrived last week for Hunter Haynes, a big-time linebacker out of Nease High School in St. Augustine, Florida. After mulling over his decision for months, Haynes committed to the Demon Deacon program over a host of top schools around the nation this past week.

“I just felt that it was a great fit for me personally, athletically, and academically,” Hunter Haynes said. “Wake Forest is a great school. All along I’ve really liked Wake Forest and I wanted to wait and make sure it was the right place for me and last week I felt it was the time.”

In the end, Haynes felt that Wake Forest had too many pros to pass up the chance to be a Demon Deacon. “I think the coaching staff at Wake Forest is a great staff and one I would love to play for in my college career,” he noted. “This year they’re young but if you look at them, their signing classes are getting better. I like the team, the defense and how tough they play. It’s something I think will be a great situation for me.”

“[My recruiting coach,] Coach Elrod is a great guy,” Haynes continued. “I’ve had a chance to spend a good amount of time with him. I came for the Wake Forest – Florida State game last year. Then, I went by when my team went to a passing tourney and he showed the whole team around which I thought was pretty cool. This year, I went up to the Wake Forest – Maryland game. I got to see Coach Grobe, Coach Lambert, and all the coaches there.”

While other coaching staffs around the country including Arizona, Michigan State, Oregon, Iowa State, Colorado, Stanford, Louisville, UCLA, Kansas State, UConn, and others also offered, Wake Forest was the right fit for Haynes – and the Deacs believe they have picked up a player that will bring a lot to the table. “The one thing I pride myself on is being a linebacker going sideline to sideline,” Haynes said of his game. “I get there make the tackle and make the hit.”

This year he has done just that, leading Nease to the playoffs by racking up 133 tackles in ten games. “It’s going good,” Haynes said of his senior season. “We finished [the regular season] 8-2. Our only losses were in Hoover, Alabama [on ESPN] and our rival St. Augustine. We’re starting the first week of the playoffs this week so our goal all along is a state championship and I think we have a shot at that.”
