Coach Talk: Terence Ricks

Terence Ricks

Wake Forest's newest commitment is Terence Ricks of Western Branch High School in Chesapeake, Va. DeaconSports.com spoke with Jarome Bell, who serves as the school's recruiting coordinator, for an in-depth look at the 6-foot-2, 210-pound athlete's prep career in the Hampton Roads area.

"This is only the second year for the coaching staff at Western Branch," said Bell. "Based on what we saw from Terence we think he's going to be a dynamic player. He did everything with a broken toe and only appeared in six games, but still averaged 11.5 yards-per-carry. We limited him to mostly one side of the ball because we had Josh Marriner. He had 35 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. I'm excited because this year we'll be getting a healthy Terence Ricks.

"Wake Forest started recruiting [Ricks] this spring. After they saw his film, Coach Himebauch called then came down and met the guy. They didn't know where they wanted him to play, but Coach Mitchell said he wanted him at running back. They want to go with a bigger feature back and decided to give Terence a shot."

Bell said that Ricks has exceptional speed with a 10.7 time in the 100 meter dash and 4.27 in the 40 yard dash. If it doesn't work out at running back, Bell believes Ricks could easily move to the defensive side of the ball.

"He has great size and speed," shared Bell. "Terence has a desire to be the best. He has just a quick get-off. Most schools were looking at him at outside linebacker the way he's able to come off the edge and get to the quarterback in 1.27 seconds. He wanted to play running back though and Wake Forest is giving him the opportunity.

"Terence loves Wake Forest. He went up for a junior day and fell in love with Winston-Salem and that whole area. He loves the academics, the family atmosphere, and shares a good rapport with Coach Himebauch and Coach Mitchell."

Ricks is the second player at Western Branch High School to commit to Wake Forest in the Class of 2014. His teammate, DaiQuan Lawrence, made his pledge to the staff less than two weeks ago.
