Peach State athlete likes three
"Two Wake Forest coaches came to my spring practice," said Darren Dowdell of Grady High School in Atlanta, Ga. "The tight end coach told me that the head coach loves how physical I am and that I go hard every play. I'm definitely going to try to get up there by June 10th. From everything I've heard [Wake Forest] is a great school, and I'm anxious to check them out.
"Right now I like Kentucky, Wake Forest, and N.C. State. Georgia Tech has offered and is showing me a lot of interest. I was at UGA's spring game. I've been talking to them as well and plan of going to their summer camp."
Dowdell was just in Lexington at the Wildcats Sunday Showcase camp at the Nutter Training Center. Many believe Kentucky is the team to beat for Dowdell, who plays both tight end and outside linebacker at Grady. However, Dowdell says he wants to make a few more trips and may not decide until much later in the calender year.
"I'm looking at finding the school where I'm the most comfortable," explained Dowdell. "One that I know will take care of me. I haven't ruled any school out yet. I probably won't verbally commit until the end of my senior season because after that there's no turning back."
Other schools that have offered Dowdell also include Louisville, Indiana, South Alabama and multiple non-BCS-conference schools. He comes off a big junior season at Grady which culminated in a selection to the prestigious Georgia Junior Bowl played at his home high school.
"I did real well in that game," said Dowdell. "They used me at defensive end, and I had one sack and one bat down. On the season, I had 10 touchdowns on offense and two interceptions on defense and a touchdown. I improved on my route running, catching the ball in traffic, and getting to the next level faster with my blocking.
"Next season, we're going to a 3-4 (defense) this season, and I'm going play play the SAM linebacker. The goal, as always, is to win state."
The Grady Knights finished 2011 with a 7-3 record but failed to make the Georgia AAA playoffs. Since the season ended, Dowdell has competed at numerous combines this spring.
