Marquez Grayson collecting offers
"My first offer was from Duke," said Marquez Grayson. "My latest offer came from ECU. I also have offers from South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, N.C. State, and Clemson. I've been hearing from Wake Forest. I've talked with Coach Galloway. I'm hearing a lot from Tennessee and North Carolina and think they both will be offering me soon."
Grayson put himself on the recruiting map early rushing for 1,378 yards as a sophomore. He backed that up with 1,093 rushing yards on 157 carries with 17 touchdowns as a junior. He also had 16 receptions for 215 yards and a touchdown coming out of the backfield and was a big threat returning kickoffs.
"I feel like I can run the ball well," Grayson said. "I have a combination of elusive speed and power. I do a good job coming out of the backfield to make a block or catch a pass.
"I know there's things I need to do to keep getting better. I'm doing power cleans and working on speed drills with the parachute. I've also been reviewing film to see what I did wrong. I think I could improve most on blocking, my posture, and footwork."
Although Grayson says he is looking closer at schools offering and showing him interest, he believes it will be awhile before he's ready to make a decision on his future.
"Right now I'm kind of just getting ready for the whole process," Grayson said of his recruitment. "My education, that's big, and will be my number one factor.
"Second, I really don't want to go too far away from home. Third has to be my relationship with the running backs coach. I want to have a tight bond with him.
"We play in a pro-style offense here at Lexington. I've mastered some things about that offense and would like to play in a similar offense in college."
Last year, Todd Gurley made most of the headlines in North Carolina 2A football, but this may be Grayson's year to become the premier back in the classification if not the state.
Grayson was named First Team All-Central Carolina Conference in 2011. This spring, to help increase his speed, he plans on running track in the 4X1 relay and the 100 meter dash for Lexington Senior High School. Grayson wears No. 22 for Yellow Jacket football.
