Coach Spotlight: Jared Crump
"Jared's a fantastic player," said Head Coach Darrell Sutherland. "He's had two great years in a row and continues to impress us. I think half of his catches have gone for touchdowns, but what has impressed me most is his downfield blocking. He's big in stature, a real physical presence with big play ability."
Crump, 6-foot-3, 187-pounds, transferred to Bartram Trail in the winter of his sophomore year. Coach Sutherland says he immediately began receiving recruiting attention during spring practice.
"Right when he came in he started getting looks," Sutherland said. "Jared's a gifted athlete with all of the physical attributes that college coaches are looking for.
"What's going to help him the most (in college) is his unbelievable work ethic which gives you a better road to success in any endeavor and also his style of play. He doesn't mind doing the dirty work. He'll be an every down player."
Crump has helped Bartram Trail to a 7-0 start this season in Florida 6A. He has 21 receptions for 519 yards and 11 touchdowns. More than half the time he's touched the ball he's taken it to the house without having put the ball on the ground. Needless to say, Lonnie Galloway, who recruited Crump, is anxious to get him on campus next year.
"Throughout the recruiting process Jared loved the coaches," said Sutherland. "He loved the campus and the atmosphere, but what really stood out to him were the quality of the men on the coaching staff.
The players we've had who have gone there can attest that they are who they say they are. They care about their players like they would their own sons and about developing them as men and not just as football players."
It will become hard for Coach Sutherland to replace a player as talented as Crump, but he's getting some help from his star senior.
"He's one of our leaders, a guy who sees the big picture with the program and what we're trying to do here," said Sutherland. "He mentors some of the younger players. He'll just stop whatever he's doing and take time to coach them up. Jared's a solid, character guy."
Bartram Trail tries to extend their winning streak this week in a game with St. Augustine. Crump wears No. 5 for the Bears.
