"First of all, I clicked with the coaching staff," Thompson said. "I liked Coach Grobe, Coach McCartney, and Coach Henry. There is a family atmosphere about Wake Forest. And the football team is up and coming and it's a great school that's close to home. I really felt like they wanted me to come there."
Wake was also the first school to offer the defensive end out of Charlotte. A few short days later, Duke and Vanderbilt both sent Thompson a scholarship offer. Virginia was close to offering prior to Thompson's verbal and North Carolina, Auburn, and North Carolina State also showed heavy interest.
What was Thompson's reaction when offered a scholarship by Wake Forest? "First of all I was really excited," Thompson said. "I had no idea they wanted me that much. Second, I was really thankful to the coaches and teammates in high school that push me to work as hard as I do. And I was thankful to God for the ability he has given me." And soon after, Thompson thanked the Wake coaches for their offer by committing. "They just congratulated me on the decision when I told them," Thompson said. "They just said they were really happy to hear that. I had gone to two junior days and they had come to school and I met with them for a minute and told one of the coaches I was ready to make a decision," Thompson said.
Does this mean that Thompson is a solid commitment to the Deacon program. "I'm pretty solid and sure Wake is the place for me, but I'm going to give everyone a fair chance," Thompson said. "But I'm pretty sure I'm going to stay with Wake Forest."
As for his summer, Thompson will visit the UNC one-day camp and maybe Vanderbilt of Virginia's camp.
